Castle Fraser

Balbithan House

About 4 km southeast of Inverurie lies Balbithan House, a 16th-century L-plan tower house historically connected with the Chalmers family. Restored by botanical artist Mary McMurtrie, it’s renowned for its period architecture, charming gardens, and riverside setting—ideal for peaceful explorations close to Strathburn.

Balquhain Castle

Just 4 km west of Inverurie, Balquhain Castle is a ruined tower house once held by the Leslies of Balquhain. Built in the 14th century and rebuilt in the 16th, it has a dramatic history of feuds and fires. Today its stone remains offer glimpses into medieval architecture in lush Aberdeenshire countryside.
